Until regulations and guidelines are implemented, natural products will continue to be dismissed by some as nothing more than "snake oil."
Rhodiola rosea is a perfect example of an excellent product with very real potential for misinformation and mislabeling. The rosea subspecies is a member of a very diverse family of Rhodiola plants - approximately 25 different subspecies are scattered across Asia nd Europe. Although they may differ, how do we know that the material found in the capsules are pure and not inferior, ineffective substitutes?
By the early 1970's it was generally accepted that salidroside (a.k.a rhodioloside) was the most important compound responsible for Rhodiola rosea's adaptogenic properties. At that time salidroside served as the marker compound for Rhodiola rosea's standardization and independent laboratory identification. But actually, salidroside is not unique to Rhodiola rosea. In fact many plants within the Rhodiola genus as well as many other genera of plants contain salidroside. Yet the vast majority of research that supports the full range of physical and mental benefits of Rhodiola are specifically linked only to the rosea variety and NOT the others. So using salidroside to explain Rhodiola rosea's unique benefits and standardize the extract on this basis was abandoned as inadequate. Serious scientists continued looking for the compounds unique to Rhodiola rosea.
After several years of intensive research, they found compounds known as "glycosides of cinnamic alcohol". They are: rosin, rosavin, and rosarin. Analysis of their adaptogenic properties showed greater effect than salidroside in stimulating the central nervous system. Reputable manufacturers should, at the least, standardize for rosavin and salidroside. The highest content of biologically active substances are found in the root and rhizomes of Rhodiola rosea harvested after several years of growth.
